Nuoro and the Traces of the Fathers

Nuoro, the geographical centre of Barbagia, is situated at 70 km from Lanusei.
A stroll around the town is certainly worthwhile, but there are also a number of museums to visit, such as the National Museum of Ethnology, the Nuoro Museum of Art (MAN), the Deleddiano Museum, the Civic Archaeological Museum.

The National Museum of Ethnology contains plenty of traditional costumes, musical instruments and photographs of how life was lived in the different geographical Sardinian regions.

The MAN exposes more than 200 art works from Sardinian major artists of the twentieth century (Antonio Ballero, Giuseppe Biasi, Francesco Ciusa, Mario Delitala, Costantino Nivola, etc.), as well as several exclusive and unique art collections. The internal itinerary of the museum is characterised by innovative divulgation media of the contents and several educational activities such as painting and graphic. An educational itinerary for children is provided and the price of the ticket includes a guided tour for visitors.

The Deleddiano Museum is situated in Grazia Deledda’s birth place; the writer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926. Inside it is possible to examine both the novelist’s personal objects and written material, some of her photos as well as some family snapshots, apart from some editions of her works. The different settings of the house have been completely reconstructed and offer a journey back in time through culture and sentiments in Barbagia from the Sardinian writer’s descriptions.

The Municipal Museum of Archaeology and Spelaeology, situated in the building once owned by Giorgio Asproni, a famous intellectual and politician of the nineteenth-century; it offers a section of the very rich archaeological patrimony of the province Nuoro and history from the Neolithic until the late Mid Ages. Some of the sections get renewed every six month. Guided tours are available on request.
