The Gennargentu is an extended mountainous massif situated in the central-eastern area of Sardinia, between the province of Nuoro and the province of Ogliastra. In order to protect the natural beauties and the biological resources, in 1998 the National Park of the Gennargentu has been instituted, it comprehends the most impervious and wild environments of the entire island.
The park’s mountainous area is characterized by real natural monuments, such as the ravine of ‘Su Gorroppu’, the crater of ‘Su Suercone’ and the karst area of ‘Su Sterru’, with centuries-old holm oaks, oak woods and Mediterranean maquis, and two important rivers, the ‘Cedrino’ and the ‘Flumendosa’. In the territory of the park animals and plants find their natural habitat: the moufflon and the Sardinian deer, the Sardinian partridge, the griffon vulture and the black vulture; the Serafino’s rose and the peony.
Possible excursions: climbing up to the crest ‘Punta La Marmora’ (the highest point of Sardinia) to enjoy the sight of a wild panorama, the flight of birds of prey or small groups of moufflons; also interesting itineraries for hiking and off-roads immerging oneself into nature or visiting the archaeological remains.
