Flora and Fauna

In Ogliastra, even more than in the other parts of Sardinia, it is possible to admire and to emerge into a wild and unspoilt nature. The Selene forest, nearby Lanusei, is an oak wood with many paths practicable afoot and by bike, where poplars, chestnut trees and many species of the Mediterranean bush are found. Interesting the presence of the purple digitalis, a plant with the characteristic violet flowers, once exploited for its cardiotonic properties. In the fauna-oasis of the Sardinian Deer, in the Supramonte of Urzulei (47 km from the hotel), there are important wreckages of the secular forest of oak trees and majestic junipers, rare wild orchids, the peony and a variety of endemisms.

Vultures and the majestic golden eagle, among the others, detach their flight from these slopes. Moufflons, wild boars, wild cats, the marten and the fox find the ideal habitat conditions in this area. This location has been selected to bring the Sardinian deer back to the Supramonte.

Finally, the Park of the Gennargentu that, for the extension of the territory and the variety of its environments, presents a vegetation rich in kind: gramineae, lawns of thyme, oaks, Mediterranean bush with holm oaks, arbutus, but also olive trees, lentisco, common juniper and carob. Among the floristic species, the Serafinos' rose, the digital, the peony.

The fauna is characterized by animals which have become rare: the moufflon, the monk seal, the griffon, the black vulture and the bearded vulture. You can also find the rare kind of butterfly, "papilo hospiton", endemic of this region.

Among the birds of prey, the royal eagle,the peregrine falcon, the Bonelli’s eagle, as well as the goshawk, the sparrow hawks and the buzzards. In the woods we find the great spotted woodpecker, the ring-dove and the roller, while in the dense bush and in the clearings the Sardinian partridge can be met. Among the mammals, the Sardinian wild cat, the marten, the weasel, the fox and, of course, the wild boar.
