Cannonau: elixir for long life
On 06/08/2008
The region Ogliastra retains the record of centenaries in Sardinia. It has recently been discovered that the famous Cannonau, one of the most representative Sardinian wines worldwide, could be a true long life elisir.
As a matter of fact, the results obtained by the scientists of the Institute William Harvey in London have shown that the red wine Cannonau produced in Ogliastra, a region in Sardinia famous for its people's longevity, is particularly rich of one particular group of polyphenols, known as polymeric procyanidins, which offer the greatest degree of protection to human blood-vessel cells. It was found to have up to 10 times more of the beneficial compounds than alternatives from Australia, South Africa and the United States. According to the local enologists, much depends on the Ogliastrian microclimate, on the exposure of the vineyards, on the 'marriage' between sea and mountains, in absolute symbiosis as nowhere else in Sardinia.
