Briar Pipes in Lanusei

The last and only Sardinian artisan briar pipe builder lives in Lanusei. The manufacture of briar, from finding the wood to working it('a ciocchi') , has been almost entirely abandoned, because the industrial pipe manufacturers prefer to buy the wood from those countries where it is cheaper.
The briar pipes built in Lanusei are of the smooth or semi-rustic kind, of a particular design starting from the “rusticatura”, custom made or according to the fancy of the artisan. The in-lays and the ‘rings’ are made of horn. These pipes are generally quite big, but on request, they can be built smaller and lighter.
